Hakupu Ekalesia Kerisiano Three Pastors’ Shortlisted for Voting
It is not the kind of issue that can be discussed in a rush and rather openly in church, selecting a resident pastor for the village of Hakupu. But the Hakupu Ekalesia Kerisiano held a special meeting straight after the afternoon church service on Sunday 12 December 2010 to discuss their views on how to select their pastor. Village Elder Mititaiagimene Young Vivian presided as Chairman assisted by the Secretary General of the church, Michael Naea Jackson.
The village has run without a pastor after the retirement of Rev [Pahetogia Faitala in June 2010. Three names are short listed for the village vote after the departing President of Ekalesia Kerisiano Niue, The Rev Hawea Reed Jackson, invited potential candidates to submit their expression of interest later this year. At present, the church has no written set of rules for electing or selecting a pastor which makes it difficult to reach a decision. Moreover, it would be unfair for only those who were present at the meeting to make a final decision as all household in the village whom are affiliated to the church contribute towards the welfare and sustenance of the Pastor and family including the house of peace.
In the end, it was agreed that the Secretary General distribute a ballot form so each family may cast a vote and return it to the church on Sunday 19 December for the final counting.
SPC Approved AUS$10,000.00 for Hakupu Council of Men Home Vegetable Gardens Project
The Hakupu Council of Men is the latest recipient of small grant funding from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. Spearheaded by the President, Kenrick Manatau Viviani and Secretary General, Fapoi Akesi of the Council, the proposal targeted the establishment of home vegetable gardens for its members and families. The project was initiated following negative publicity on the growing number of village people being affected by non-communicable diseases and also complements the work of the health centre run by the Hakupu Council of Women at Tuatea. Concerns that one of the main reasons that contributed to the drastic decline of the village population on medical referral for specialised treatment in New Zealand due to NCD’s prompted the Committee to kick start the home grown vegetable garden idea.
In August, the Council held a practical workshop for its members at the vegetable project of its President Kenrick at their home in Matavao, Hakupu. A former public expert in agricultural farming and research, Kenrick refused to surrender his affection and care for planting and farming since he retired from the service many years ago. Members liked the idea and dreamt how to follow the success of their President’s vegetable garden.
With the support of the Health Department Health Promotion Unit, SG Akesi lodged the application to SPC in October 2010 for consideration under the Small Grants Scheme.
President Kenrick said they really appreciated the approval by SPC via the Healthy Pacific Lifestyles Section, an indication of a shared vision to grow and eat healthy food. They learnt much from the realization that costs of imported vegetable from New Zealand are expensive and deny the right of people to have vegetable as part of their meals when vegetable can be grown locally outside the homes.
“Thank you SPC and the experts involved for helping us to try and fulfil our members home grown vegetable garden project” he said.
“We will work hard together with SPC to achieve our goals and account for the funds in the usual manner. I would invite any of the SPC staff who may come to Niue in the near future to visit us in Hakupu to witness what we are doing” Kenrick added.
Ekalesia Kerisiano Niue – Lay Preaching Graduation
On the 16th November, Mr Scan and Mrs Rossy MiTiepo gracefully accepted their Lay Preacher Certificates presented by the President of Ekalesia Kerisiano Niue, The Reverend Hawea Reed Jackson, in front of the special congregation conducted at the Mission House in Alofi North for the occasion. Members of the Executive Committee, lay preacher trainees and families rallied together in joy to witness and celebrate the milestone occasion.
The devotion started at 6pm to bless what marks the end of the theory part yet the beginning of a life long Christian journey ahead of them. What completed the cycle of sacrifice in the three years was the dedicated bible reading by Rossy Mistepo and the touching sermon prepared and delivered by Scan Misiepo prior to the graduation ceremony. To top it all up, the holy duo had composed and led a hymn sung with their college colleagues.
Unfortunately, their colleague, Rheumatic Fotukiulu-Alapaki, the third graduate for the event was away overseas in New Zealand and missed out the formal ceremony. The three lay preacher graduates are from the Hakupu Ekalesia Kerisiano branch. The training programme spreads over three years where students attend weekly sessions held at the Ekalesia Niue/ Millennium Hall during the school term every Tuesday evening from 5 to 8pm. The core program focuses on the study of the bible “Foafoaaga moe Veseveseaga” led by the senior pastors of the Ekalesia Village churches
Congratulations Mr & Mrs Mitiepo and Mrs Rheumatic Fotukiulu-Alapaki
